CRENEO's Award-Winning Design Combines Sensitivity and Functionality in Palliative Care

CRENEO, a renowned design team, has created a compassionate and user-friendly design for Kinderpalliativ Netzwerk Nordrhein, a network dedicated to the palliative care of terminally ill children. This design, which won the Silver A' Design Award in 2019, combines sensitivity and functionality, providing an emotionally appealing approach to a sensitive topic.

The design was inspired by the need for competent palliative care for terminally ill children and youths, which requires a multi-professional setting. The Kinderpalliativ Netzwerk Nordrhein was founded under the leadership of Dr. Gisela Janssen, and CRENEO was tasked with developing and realizing a new look for the network. The result is a uniform and modern visual language, including a logo, color world, image world, iconography, and typography.

What sets this design apart is its unique word-image-brand, created after a careful analysis of the segment. The figurative mark acts as a visual platform for the newly developed iconography concept. The symbolic imagery communicates the sensitive content of this topic in a subtle, focused manner. The illustrations, including a recurring ship representing the transition between life and death, achieve a high level of visual distinctiveness.

The design was realized using a combination of hand-drawn illustrations, Adobe Illustrator for the logo and iconography, and Adobe Photoshop for the website design, which was then programmed and realized with Wordpress. The website is designed to work on any screen, ensuring accessibility for all users.

The design process involved a careful analysis of the segment, with the aim of making the website more appealing and structured. The main challenge was creating a user-friendly digital platform that could be used as an information and advice portal for the palliative care of terminally ill children, while providing an emotionally appealing approach to this sensitive topic.

The project, which started in 2017 and lasted for 4 months, was carried out in Düsseldorf, Germany. The design team included Alexander Willuweit (Creative Direction / Art Direction) and Helke Rah (Illustration). The design has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award, a prestigious accolade rewarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
